Description of the painting by Fedor Reshetnikov “Arrived for the holidays”

The painting “Arrived on Vacation” by Fedor Reshetnikov is a work whose popularity among the author’s works is comparable only to the canvas “again two”. In 1949, she even won the Stalin Prize.

The New Year holidays arrived, and the Suvorovites were allowed to stay home. Like this boy in the picture, who, with a suitcase in his hand and in full uniform, stands at attention in the hallway on the rug. It is evident that the little boy is happy to see his family: he smiles and fervently gives a report to his grandfather. A grandfather, perhaps once a military man, is taking a serious report. And, although we do not see his face, we can guess that after a moment it lit up with a happy smile. In this ordinary Soviet room, a festive atmosphere reigns: a Christmas tree is already decorated, the sister, putting on her full school uniform, cleans and sets the table, and the cat sitting on the chair patiently waits for him to get something tasty from the New Year's dinner.

The photograph hanging on the wall is a portrait of a military man, which this gray-haired grandfather might have been. But here we understand that the family is depicted as not rich, as the situation in the room speaks of, and the state paid for children in Suvorov schools, provided that the father did not return from the war. And there is almost no doubt that the portrait shows the father of the boy.

One of the themes of the picture is the connection and continuity of generations. The boy, like his father or grandfather, chose the army service for himself and, it seems, had already achieved success in it. We see on the wall a reproduction of the painting “Three Heroes”, which have set themselves the goal of protecting the Russian lands, and before us is a Suvorovite who will soon become a worthy defender of his homeland!

Despite the slight sad overtones, the picture literally exudes optimism and makes one involuntarily smile. As already mentioned, the picture became very popular in the USSR, and the number of stamps and postcards with its image exceeded thirteen million.
