Avilov depicted the battle that took place between the Russian hero and the warrior of the Tatars. It was with him that the battle on the Kulikovo field began.

Avilov painted this canvas when the defense of Stalingrad was on. The artist said that the composition of his paintings is incredibly simple. In the center, we see two horses rearing up. On them sit: Relight - on the left, and on the right - Chelubey.

The artist depicts the main characters very large. They completely overshadow everything else depicted on this canvas. Avilov specifically exaggerated their gigantic strength and gigantic growth. He brought them to a truly pathos sound, which is characteristic of epics.

The painter raises the figures of the gigantic horses above the plain. They look like fancy pyramids.

The colors are as intense as possible in the image of the two main characters. The armies that can be seen somewhere far behind them are deliberately registered very pale. Horses look really intimidating. Their manes flutter belligerently, and their mouths are completely bared.

The artist uses a fanciful game of colors in order to convey with paints a certain state of warriors. The gray shade prevails on the left. He speaks of maximum confidence and excellent endurance of soldiers. Warriors are anxiously awaiting the outcome of this grand duel. But at the same time they stand unwaveringly, like a rock of granite. Before the army, Avilov painted Dmitry Donskoy himself on a white horse.

For the image of the troops of the Tatar-Mongols, the painter chooses colorful and bright shades. This suggests that the enemy is completely insecure. He doubts whether he will be able to win or have to surrender to the mercy of the winner.

The canvas of Avilov is as expressive as possible. Everyone is waiting for the denouement. The artist masterfully conveys the impending tension.
